 BDELLOID ROTIFER

A microscopic animal that was frozen for more than about 24,000 years in Siberian ice now has come back to the life.

Cryptobiosis is an state of almost completely arrested metabolism. And multicellular animal could withstand tens of thousands of years in cryptobiosis. They had previously identified single celled microbes capable of similar feats. In term of multicellular organisms there has been a report of a 30,000-years-old nematodes worm coming back to life and mosses some plants also have been regenerated after many thousands of years trapped in the ice.

This animal lives in freshwater environments and is about half a millimeter in length.

Once thawed the animal was able to reproduce a sexually using a process called parthenogenesis.

The name is derived from the Latin for wheel bearer, which comes from the corona around their mouths that look like turning wheels. They use these to move and to feed.
